When the sound perceived with the problem of ringing ears is rhythmical noise at the same rate as the heartbeat it is called pulsatile tinnitus. You can easily detect this by feeling the pulse at the same time you listen to the ringing noise. With this type of tinnitus it may actually be easy to find a specific cause for the problem of ringing ears.
What are the causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus?
A change in blood flow in the vessels near the ear and a change in the awareness level of the ears to the blood flow in the body are considered to be the main causes for this type of ringing ears problem.
Increased blood flow in the body can happen due to strenuous workouts or even due to other health problems like anemia and thyroid. An overactive thyroid gland is known to increase the flow of blood in the body and this may cause pulsatile tinnitus.
Certain health problems can produce increased blood flow in certain parts of the body and this may cause the problem of ringing ears.
A variation in the blood flow can also be caused due to hardened arteries in some parts of the body. Hardened arteries cause a turbulent flow of blood resulting in extra noise.
Some hearing loss problems due to perforated eardrums or glue ear can make a person more aware of the internal body noise because they do not hear the external masking noise. This condition is nothing but pulsatile tinnitus.
What are the treatment options for pulsatile tinnitus?
In cases where a specific cause can be found, a treatment for that particular problem may be given. If a person has overactive thyroid then a treatment for thyroid glands is given. Similarly grafting may be used to close perforated eardrums.
However if no specific causes can be found out, then treatment for pulsatile tinnitus will be similar to treatment for normal ringing ears problem. This will include tinnitus retraining therapy, sound therapy, relaxation therapy etc.
