Different types of Tinnitus
Types of Tinnitus
There are two general types of tinnitus or the ringing in the ears. The first one is the subjective tinnitus, and the other is the objective tinnitus. The first one is when you are the only one who hears the ringing sound. The second one is the sound in your head which could be heard by you and your physician through a medical listening instrument. These have mostly the same characteristics.
These both occur as a ringing sound in the inner ear. They are both difficult to cope with. These types of tinnitus also do not go away easily. These tinnitus types are usually either these sounds – roaring, ringing, humming, beating/pulsating or whooshing. For most cases, the tinnitus is a monotonous sound.
In any case, the sound could be very loud in the person’s ears. Sometimes, the sound is so loud that exterior or background sounds are drowned. Some people suffering from either type have been distracted with the loud sound during work, communicating with other or even when trying to sleep.
Subjective tinnitus is usually decided on as a nuisance as its sound is slightly lesser. The objective tinnitus is more often the louder one. It is also known as the pulsatile tinnitus. It is called such because the ringing sound is almost in the same rhythm as the beating of the heart. The objective tinnitus is also a common symptom of further or aggravated diseases.
There are diseases, disorders or illnesses commonly associated with the objective tinnitus. Hypertension or high blood pressure is one. Physical or mental stress could cause failing health which could cause imbalance of the body. The most serious causes of objective tinnitus are tumors in the neck and/or head, and clogged carotid artery. In addition, when capillaries are malformed, the connection between the arteries and the veins are affected. When there are obstructions in the way of the veins to the arteries, noises in the inner ear are likely to occur.
Medications that Cause Tinnitus…
Although these have the almost all the same characteristics, each type of tinnitus should be treated differently. Subjective tinnitus could be treated with Lidocaine injections in the inner ear. Changes in food or drink intake are also a suitable remedy. There should be reduction in intake of salt or glutamate-rich foods, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. However, in some cases of patients with subjective tinnitus, alcohol relieves some inner ear pain or the tinnitus itself. Treatment for objective tinnitus may be through surgical methods or medicine intake.
In order to get the best treatment, it is best that you should first consult a doctor. The doctor would tell you what type of tinnitus you have. When the doctor is sure of which tinnitus you are experiencing, the specific treatment could also be given to you. You should also thoroughly discuss with your doctor as to which treatment you prefer.
Also, if the tinnitus is caused by psychological issues, retraining therapy may be given to you. This therapy is through a combination of counseling and external sound therapy.
