Tinnitus – How Can I Stop It?
Who gets tinnitus? Ronald Reagan, Sting, Sylvester Stallone, Beethoven and Schuman are just some of the more famous. But anyone can suffer from the "ringing in the ears" commonly associated with the potentially debilitating condition known as tinnitus.
Though the sounds described by sufferers can vary widely from buzzing, whistling, whooshing, gushing, or a roaring sound like waves. And it can be heard in either ear, or both, or it can be difficult to say where the sound seems to be coming from. It’s a very individual experience which each person will describe differently and they will react to it differently. It may be continuous in nature or very intermittent. Likewise it can be temporary or permanent. But for those unfortunate enough to suffer long term it can be very distressing and even lead to depression.
Unfortunately a visit to your doctor may not be much help, as he may firmly believe that tinnitus cannot be stopped. He will be joined by the rest of the medical profession in this assumption. Generally the treatment recommended will be some form of coping mechanism not a cure.
This is sometimes known as TRT or Tinnitus Retraining therapy. Essentially you learn to cope with the condition, through counselling and possibly noise generators to mask the sounds of your tinnitus. These noise generators can be like hearing aids or they may sit on a table or desk. Suffers sometimes leave the TV or radio on at night in order to get to sleep. Doesn’t sound like much of a cure.

If we acknowledge the fact that all tinnitus sufferers have some hearing loss but not all people with hearing loss have tinnitus, then it follows that there are other contributing factors.
