Vascular Tinnitus
Pulsatile Tinnitus – What Are the Major Causes and Best Pulsatile …
Pulsatile tinnitus affects approximately 3% of tinnitus sufferers. It is usually perceived as a rhythmic pulsing sound that is often in time with the heart beat. It is sometimes referred to as vascular tinnitus because it is related to disturbances in the blood flow.
Pulsatile tinnitus originates in the head and neck area. The blood vessels in the head and neck area come too narrow or there is increased blood flow in the blood vessels. This results is turbulent blood flow that can be heard in the ears. This kind of tinnitus is completely different from regular tinnitus that is usually caused by damage to the cochlea.
So what causes this kind of tinnitus? Let’s go over a few of these.
-Benign Intracranial Hypertenstion: a condition where there is increased pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain. Most of these patients are young women and are overweight. Other symptoms are dizziness, hearing loss, headaches, and vision problems.
-Middle Ear Effusion: this occurs when the middle ear is filled with fluid. This happens with ear infections, inflammation, and eustachian tube dysfuntion. Some other symptoms may include decreased hearing and pain.
-Hypertension Medication : some patients develop pulsatile tinnitus after taking hypertension medication.
Patients that have benign intracranial hypertention can improve their symptoms by losing weight and taking a diuretic. Those that have been diagnosed with middle ear effusion can try decongestants, nasal sprays, antibiotics and sometimes require surgery. Sometimes the cause of the increased fluids can be due to allergies. Allergy medication may help improve these symptoms. Those that take hypertension medication can try changing medications to relieve their ringing ears.
